Minister of Trade and Industry
Ahmed Samir has taken part via video conference in the AfCFTA 10th
Meeting of the Council of Ministers, held in Accra, Ghana, on October 7-8. Egypt’s
participating delegation was led by Ibrahim al-Seguiny, assistant minister for
economic affairs.
On the margins of the meeting, a
ceremony was held to launch the AfCFTA Guided Trade Initiative to mark the
commencement of trade under the agreement.
The initiative will serve as a
gateway to encourage continued trade under the agreement, through matchmaking
businesses and products for export and import between the interested State
Parties representing five African regions.
It will cover a range of food
products, including: ceramic tiles, tea, coffee, processed meat products, corn
starch, sugar, pasta, glucose syrup, dried fruits, and sisal fiber, amongst
others.
“The move is a basic and initial step
towards harnessing the full potential of the AfCFTA and its member markets,”
Samir said, noting that Egypt is committed to eliminating all obstacles to
export under the initiative.
