Egypt has made headway in the decarbonization path of its local industry, Samir says.

Sharm el-Sheikh- Nov 11, 2022

Minister of Trade and Industry Ahmed Samir has taken part in the opening session of the ‘Decarbonization Day’ at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, along with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek al-Molla.

“Egypt has made headway in the decarbonization path of its local industry, shifting to green technologies and low-carbon infrastructure in industrial parks,” Samir said in his keynote speech.

He stressed the need to join efforts to achieve climate goals and find eco-friendly solutions especially with regards to manufacturing, which causes one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The ministry, he added, has undertaken a project to enhance energy-efficiency in the industrial sector in cooperation with a number of international institutions, as well as promoted clean energy investment.

Furthermore, Egypt is currently expanding its Green Certification Program to government procurements, encouraging products with a “Green Star” label, and is launching a national plan for emissions trading to promote the use of low-carbon technologies, Samir pointed out.
