Minister of Trade and Industry
Ahmed Samir has met with a delegation from Shift EV, the first local company
for electric car conversion in Egypt and MENA, to discuss its prototype
electric battery and other activities in the field.
“The ministry is keen on embracing
high technologies in manufacturing, especially in carmaking, to meet the needs
of local consumers and keep up with the global shift to eco-friendly vehicles,”
Samir noted, pointing to Egypt’s hosting of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh next
November.
The minister stressed commitment to
offer all support to the $9-million Shift EV factory in its trial operation. He
also stressed that the company should boost local components in the industry.
Ali al-Tayeb, managing director and
one of the founders of the startup, said that a fleet of gasoline and
diesel-powered passenger cars and trucks have already been converted to
electric operation. He added that the factory will soon be officially opened.
