Cairo- June 2, 2022

Robbiki Leather City has received a high-level delegation from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), within preparations for the upcoming annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) scheduled to take place in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm al-Sheikh on November 7-18.

The aim of the visit is to discuss means of accelerating sustainability action and upgrading the leather and textile industries while reducing their harmful effects on the environment.

Mahmoud Mahrez, president of Cairo Investment Company, accompanied the delegation on their tour and explained the accomplishments achieved by the major relocation of old-Cairo tanneries to the new integrated city and the recent expansions carried out.

“The Ministry of Trade and Industry is committed to advancing the leather industry across its supply chains, from tanning to finished leather products, with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness of locally-manufactured goods and boosting exports,” Mahrez said.

The Robbiki city, he added, is on its way to become a regional and international hub for leather industries, especially with Egypt’s long-standing, competitive edge in the business.

According to figures, the government has provided $7.2 billion to finance the three-phase project. Leather exports hit $100 million in 2021, up 65% from a year earlier, mainly to the markets of China, Spain, India and Italy.
