Africa’s heavyweights, Egypt was one of the few countries that achieved economic
growth of about 3.57% during the pandemic in 2019/2020.

“Egypt’s Production Transformation Policy Review” (PTPR) was
launched today under the auspices of the Government of Egypt and with the
participation of senior officials from the Development Centre of the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the United
Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations
Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the UN Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO) and the African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank), in
collaboration with The German International Cooperation (GIZ).
The report was launched under the
OECD Initiative on Global Value Chains (GVCs), Production Transformation and
“Egypt is among Africa’s heavyweights and was
one of the few countries that achieved economic growth of about 3.57% during
the pandemic in 2019/2020,” Gamea said in her speech at the virtual event.
The industrial sector, she added,
was the country’s key economic growth driver, contributing 17.1% to the GDP in
2019/2020 compared to 16.4 % a year earlier, and growing 1.4%, although less
than the 2.8% of last year.
