Minister of
Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has issued a decree halting the export of whole
and split fava beans for three months, as of publication in the Egyptian
gazette.
It only allows exporting quantities in excess of the market’s
needs, estimated by the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade and approved by
the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
“The decision was made in coordination with the Minister of
Supply and Internal Trade, within the government’s efforts to provide for the
needs of citizens amid the COVID-19 crisis,” Gamea said.
She added that the move comes in light of preparations for
the holy month of Ramadan, during which consumption of beans triples, while total
production only covers 30% of it.
