Experts in the field of packaging and food industries gathered today at a panel discussion entitled “Innovation in Modern Packaging,” held within the Food Africa expo.

The event was led by Ahmed Reda, assistant minister of Trade and Industry for industrial affairs; Ahmed Gaber, chairman of the Chamber of Printing and Packaging Industry; Nezar Sami, innovation and technology management consultant; and Sarah Ibrahim, executive director of the Export Council for Printing and Packaging.

Reda, who is also the general supervisor of MTI’s technology centers, said that the strategy of centers aims to form a link with universities and scientific institutions, transfer and localize modern technology to the Egyptian industry while developing new policies to support such technology, and promote the efficient use of resources with a focus on environment- friendly technologies.

Gaber said that packaging is a key industrial service sector, that is complementary to various industries especially food.

“The government has made unremitting efforts in the field of innovation, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), to establish a competitive economy that adopts the principles of innovation,” Sami said.

Ibrahim, for her part, said that the sector’s exports grew significantly by 40% during the first 10 months of the year.
