solar plants at Sharm El-Sheikh airport and nine hotels.
Cairo- Mar 31, 2022
Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine
Gamea, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad and Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed
Manar have witnessed the signing of two cooperation protocols to offer
technical support to solar plants in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The first was signed between the
Industrial Modernization Center (IMC), the Ministry of Electricity and
Renewable Energy, and the Egyptian Airports Company to provide technical
support in the establishment of a solar plant at Sharm El-Sheikh International
Airport; and the second to provide technical support in the installation of
solar units at nine hotels in the Red Sea resort city.
Alessandro Fracassetti, UNDP resident
representative in Egypt, and Ghada Shalaby, deputy minister of tourism, attended
the signing ceremony.
“The agreements come within the
ministry's drive to localize industries with high added value and technological
component, including the manufacture of solar plant components, especially in
light of the national shift towards diversifying energy sources and increasing
reliance on renewable energy,” Gamea said.
The minister also highlighted the
IMC’s key role in the execution of the Egypt-PV small solar cell systems project.
The protocols, she added, coincide with
the launch of the Green Sharm El Sheikh (GEF) project, which aims to turn it
into a model integrated and ecologically-sustainable tourism city, through the
adoption of further low-carbon technologies, proactive waste prevention and
management practices.
