Minister of Trade and Industry
Nevine Gamea has visited the headquarters of the Egyptian General Organization
for Standardization and Quality (EOS), where she inspected a number of testing laboratories;
the energy efficiency, certificate registration, consumer protection and citizen
service units; as well as the training center.
She also held a meeting with Khaled
Sofy, head of the EOS, and its top officials, where they reviewed the
authority's vision to develop the standard specifications system and boost local
product quality.
“We are keen to reconcile Egyptian
specifications with global standards, while introducing new ones that take into
account national requirements,” Gamea said, stressing that standard
specifications protect Egyptian consumers from low-quality
imports.
Sofi noted that the authority
issued 9,300 Egyptian specifications covering the fields of engineering,
food, chemicals, building materials, refractories, garments and textiles, petroleum
products, communications, medical devices, and industrial standards. It also granted
the Quality Mark to 188 companies for a total of 504 products.
The EOS, he added, aims to issue further standard specifications in tourism,
transport, communications, information, safety, occupational health and social
responsibility.
