Minister
of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has taken part - via video conference - in
the preparatory meeting of Arab trade ministers for the Twelfth WTO Ministerial
Conference (MC12), to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 30 to
December 3.
The
meeting, hosted by Saudi Arabia, was chaired by Saudi Minister of Commerce and
Investment Majid al-Qasabi, and WTO Deputy Director-General Angela Ellard.
“Egypt
attaches great importance to enhancing the role of the WTO as a pillar of the
multilateral global trading system,” Gamea said, noting that the government
supports efforts of Arab countries as well as WTO members to reach tangible
results regarding development and sustainability at MC12 next month.
She stressed
the importance of concerted efforts by all member states to address the
outstanding issues in the Doha Development Round, and to quickly reach
decisions on the urgent matters imposed by the Covid-19 crisis.
Egypt,
Gamea added, commends the tireless efforts aimed at reaching an agreement on
the prohibition of certain forms of fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity
and over-fishing, without compromising the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals which
aim to eradicate poverty and hunger.
The minister
also highlighted the need to further strengthen the “special and differential
treatment” provisions in all agreements in order to support the efforts of
developing and least developed countries to achieve industrial development and
economic diversification.
