Minister of Trade and Industry
Nevine Gamea has chaired the meeting of the “tuktuk” replacement committee, responsible
for providing a mechanism to carry out the national initiative to replace the popular
three-wheelers with safer, small passenger vehicles.
Minister of Public Enterprise
Sector Hisham Tawfik, as well as heads of the Industrial Development Authority,
Egyptian Organization For Standardization and Quality, and the Industrial
Modernization Center participated in the meeting.
The meeting reviewed suggested
alternative models for “tuktuks”, especially clean ones, offered by the ministries
of the public enterprise sector and military production, in cooperation with
numerous local and international carmakers.
Gamea pointed out the three main
criteria that must be met by an alternative vehicle: safety,
environment-friendliness and ability to navigate traffic.
