Following
the meetings of the eighth Egyptian-Ukrainian Joint Committee for Economic, Scientific
and Technical Cooperation two days ago, the Egyptian-Ukrainian Business Forum
opened today in the presence of Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
of Economy Yulia Svyrydenko and Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Rania
al-Mashat, along a host of officials and businessmen from both countries.
“The
Egyptian government is looking forward to deeper cooperation between Cairo and
Kiev in trade, investment and sectors of common interest,” Assistant Minister for
Economic Affairs Ibrahim al-Seguiny said in a speech delivered on behalf of Minister
of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea.
The
forum, she noted, represents a real opportunity to explore broader horizons to boost
bilateral trade and investments, and lay the foundations for a serious
partnership and constructive cooperation between Egypt and Ukraine.
The
minister pointed out that there are ample opportunities to increase Egyptian
exports to Ukraine, especially in agricultural products, ceramics, fertilizers,
ready-made clothes among others.
Svyrydenko,
for her part, said that Egypt is one of Ukraine’s top trading partners in Africa
and the Middle East, being its gateway to Africa. She further expressed her
country's keenness to strengthen cooperation with Egypt during the next period.
According
to official figures, trade between Egypt and Ukraine has grown remarkably over
the past years to over $1.6 billion in 2020, with exports to Ukraine rising by 47%,
despite the pandemic’s fallout on the global economy.
