Egypt is the world's top date producer, accounting for 18% of
global production, and the first in the Arab world by 23%.

The Fifth Egypt International Date
Palm Festival opened today in Siwa, Matrouh governorate, held under the
patronage of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and runs until Jan 24.
“The government gives special
attention to developing the date palm industry, being one of the promising
production sectors that plays a major role in economic and social development
as well as export growth and job creation,” said Ahmad Reda, associate minister
for industrial affairs, in a speech delivered on behalf of Minister of Trade
and Industry Nevine Gamea.
Egypt, she pointed out, is the
world's top date producer, accounting for 18% of global production, and the
first in the Arab world by 23%.
Gamea added that the festival is a key
step to advance the date sector and boost its competiveness on international
markets. To this end, the ministry is implementing a comprehensive strategy and
seeks to create a global brand for Egyptian dates.
The minister further noted that
there are 150 facilities for date production across the country, in the New
Valley, Bahariya Oasis, Siwa, Aswan, Luxor, al-Badrashin, Fayoum, Borg al-Arab,
al-Amereya, Delta, Damietta and Sharqia.
The opening ceremony was attended
by Marsa Matrouh governor, the Indonesian ambassador and the secretary general
of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm.
