The committee was formed within a national drive to boost the
carpet industry.

Minister of Trade and Industry has
chaired the first meeting of the committee to support Egyptian carpet industry,
established by the prime minister’s decree.
The newly-formed committee includes
representatives of the ministries of finance, public sector and international
cooperation; the Medium, Small and Micro Enterprise Development Agency; the
National Service Projects Authority; the General Investment Authority; the
chambers of textile industries and ready-made garments at the Federation of
Egyptian Industries; the Furniture Export Council; along with a number of local
carpet manufacturers.
“A comprehensive study is currently
being conducted to develop Egypt’s carpet industry and boost its competitiveness
both on local and international markets,” Gamea said.
The formation of the committee, she
added, comes within a national drive to enhance the sector where Egypt enjoys
great potential.
The meeting discussed maximizing
the benefits from Egypt’s trade agreements to facilitate the entry of the its
carpet exports to foreign markets and seeking new partnerships with targeted ones,
providing technical and financial support to manufacturers, setting up a
technical school to qualify workers, and expanding the participation of
Egyptian companies in international carpet expos.
According to official data, Egypt’s
carpet exports have witnessed an increase over the past five years, rising from
$298 million in 2016 to $340 million in 2020.
